KATHLEEN WILKE

Kathleen Wilke was born in Youngstown Ohio, and now resides in Dallas Texas. Kathleen attended the Art Academy of Cincinnati and the Art Institute of Boston where she studied photography and illustration. Her photography career began with children’s portraiture, and later evolved into fine art photography. Kathleen specializes in underwater images.

 

ARTIST STATEMENT

My recent work has been exclusively underwater. With the use of natural light fragmented through the water’s surface, hues are intensified, and a glowing dream-like image is created. Water suspends my subjects gracefully, dressed in vintage gowns, the fabric flows with a rhythm of beauty which could not possibly be achieved in air.

 

My images are an attempt to capture these fleeting moments of suspension in water. Some of my digital compositions have been created by using multiple photographs in layers placed in varying degrees of opacity on top of another. Other compositions are created by layering one additional image of a natural substance such as rippled water, stone, or metal surfaces on top of the central subject which lends a painterly aesthetic.

 

This subject matter and technique constantly amazes me, and I cannot see how I could ever tire of photographing this magic underwater world!
